When we started building bikes in the early 1980’s Sun Tour was the preeminent choice in derailleurs other than the very elite and expensive pro brand, Campagnolo. And the preeminent maker of high volume yet decent quality alloy cranksets was Sugino. For you cycling historians, Sun Tour ended the era of the French derailleur makers Huet and Simplex while Sugino similarly vanquished rival French crank makers Stronglight and T.A. Shimano, at this time, was only a small player. But as history has show, it was a sitting giant. When Sun Tour’s patent expired on their game-changing parallelogram derailleur, Shimano pounced. Utilizing Sun Tour’s design, Shimano unveiled “click shifting”. And the world loved it.

Sram is the newest of cycling’s Big-3. Head-to-head with Campagnolo and Shimano, Sram is both a welcome force and a force to be reckoned with. We have vivid memories of the early iterations of Sram as our Campagnolo sponsored Scott-BiKyle pro team competed against one of Sram’s earliest and most formidable pro teams, LA Sheriffs.
