Long Haul Trucker ~

Our unanimous choice for a high quality full touring bike

A touring bike’s job is to go the distance, and then some, while carrying you and your gear in comfort. The LHT's low bottom bracket and long chainstays provide stability with road-smoothing comfort, and those long stays increase heel clearance when carrying packed panniers. Surly gave the LHT ample tire clearance for larger tires because larger tires soak up a lot of road static. And, there is plenty of extra clearance for fenders too. The frame’s tubing is thicker-walled and larger-diameter than standard road and sport-touring frames; this pre-tunes the bike for the added weight of cargo. The Long Haul Trucker has braze-ons for everything you’re likely to need, from racks to 3 water bottle cages to spare spokes.

The LHT frame is made of double butted 4130 cromoly steel with matching 4130 cromoly fork. We like steel touring framesets for a lot of reasons. Foremost is the ride quality a well designed steel frame delivers. It doesn’t hurt that steel is relatively inexpensive or that it is more easily repaired than aluminum or carbon fiber. You’ll probably never need to have the frame repaired, but if you do then you’ll pleased to know that Cycles BiKyle's frame builder can fix anything on this frame. Available in gloss black or dark green.

The LHT is offered as a frameset or complete bike.  The Trucker is available in a 26” wheel size across the size run, with an option for 700c in 56, 58, 60, and 62cm sizes.  Some people prefer  the larger diameter 700c, and that’s cool. 26" is a more popular size around the world, however, so you’ll more easily be able to find replacement tubes, tires, and rims should the need arise. Smaller wheels are also stronger than their 700c counterparts, so they’ll stand up better to rough roads and heavy loads.

The LHT Complete is set up with quality parts specifically meant for the purpose of this bike. Add racks, fenders, pedals, and bags and go someplace!

2012 Parts: Shimano 9-speed bar ends with LX rear derailleur and Sora front, Andel triple crankset (48.36.26) in forged alloy with Shimano UN54 sealed cartridge bottom bracket, Shimano HG-50 11-34 cassette, Sram PC971 chain, 1 1/8" Cane Creek 40 threadless headset, alloy 26.0 bar and stem, Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes with Tektro RL341 levers, Kalloy 27.2 alloy seatpost, WTB SST-Comp saddle, no pedals.

2012 Wheels: 36 hole Shimano LX hubs with double walled Alex Adventurer rims in 700c or 26" and 14g DT stainless spokes. Tires are wired-bead Continental Contact in 700c x 37mm or Michelin City in 26 x 1.85".

Long Trucker S&S Deluxe ~

The Long Haul Trucker is a touring frame suited to long distance, loaded travel in relative ease and comfort. It’s designed to use racks and panniers, fenders and larger volume tires. The fact is, however, you can’t ride your bike everywhere. Sometimes if you want to take your bike along - say, across an ocean - you need a convenient way to get it there with the least amount of hassle, expense, and potential for damage.

The Trucker Deluxe is a version of our Long Haul Trucker utilizing S&S Machine Co.’s bicycle torque couplings, better known as S&S Couplers. These are machined stainless steel pieces that are brazed into the top and down tubes of the frame. They add a small bit of weight (just 227grams per frame), but result in a bike that can be split in two, partially disassembled, and packed into a case the size of a medium suitcase for easy transport. When you put it all back together, you have a regular bike … your bike!

Unlike regular LHTs, the Trucker Deluxe is available only in a 26” wheel version in all frame sizes. Why? First, 26” wheels with inflated tires will fit into a travel case within common airline regulation size, meaning it is not considered oversized, and therefore is not usually subject to extra fees.  Inflated tires do not pose a problem on most airplanes because even the cargo portion is pressurized, so plus when you reassemble your bike it is pretty convenient not to have to reinflate your tires with a frame pump (you’re not going to fit a floor pump in that case). And 26” is a popular global standard so finding tires, tubes, or rims will be easier to find than 700c stuff if events warrant finding such things.

It should go without saying that owning such a bike brings some responsibilities on your part. You will need the basic tools and know-how to safely remove and reinstall your wheels, your handlebar or stem, your pedals, and possibly other stuff, like your fork (especially on larger frames). Learning to pack your bike in a case requires some patience and practice, but the convenience of having your personal bike everywhere you need it is well worth the extra effort.
