Shimano Dura Ace 10 speed ~
Dura
Ace received a full overhaul in 2004. Using 10 cogs in the back, it joins
Campagnolo with that feature. The new 10 speed cassettes will fit right onto
existing 9 speed Shimano bodies! Brand new cranks, utilizing the design of
the current XTR mountain group, use outboard bottom bracket bearings for more stiffness
and increased durability. This
leaves a very sexy right crankarm, though it's still a bit clunky on the left side.
The new shifters have a long and more narrow hand grip that feels
much nicer; it
should be particularly good for riders with extra large hands. Cables continue
to run outside the bar tape (Shimano feels that identifies
their groups in the pro peloton). Brakes are reshaped a bit as are the new hubs.
Gripping power on the front brake has been increased, but
grip on the rear remains the same. This provides a more balanced braking action
at speed. New brake pads should last longer and are now much easier to adjust
for toe-in.
Tech note: The 10 speed cassette will fit on all
current Shimano 9 speed bodies. So, you can continue to use your previous
wheels. However, the 9 speed cassettes will not fit on the new 10 speed hubs.
