Campagnolo made so many improvements in 2010 that it's
difficult to follow along. Here's our nice recap that makes it easy to understand
all the
changes.
To start, the Super Record, Record, Chorus, and Athena groups now feature 11 cogs
in the back! Centaur and Veloce remain 10 speed. The Centaur and Veloce
groups are practically the same except for finish. Centaur is finished in
hand polished silver while Veloce is finished in heat hardened black. Also,
Veloce uses galvanized finishing bolts while Centaur uses stainless steel. Both
of these groups are exceptional values in 10 speed groups.
Cranksets
~
All Campagnolo cranksets feature oversized external "Ultra-Torque" bottom
brackets. All of the large
chainrings include 8 pin pickups for precise shifting. Veloce and Centaur Alu cranks are made of
forged aluminum with shear-drawn chainrings. All carbon cranks are made of both uni and multi-directional carbon for increased strength in all directions.
Athena cranksets, offered in both forged aluminum and carbon versions, move to hard anodized, machined light-alloy chainrings with ESP
enhanced shifting contours and light alloy fixing bolts. Chorus cranks move to
UHM carbon for increased strength and less weight. To further save weight, Super
Record and Record cranks have "Ultra-Hollow" carbon arms. New for
2011, Super Record spindle is now available in both cromoly and titanium
options. Available
with 170, 172.5, or 175mm arms in all models. All models available with either
53 x39 "regular" chainrings or 50 x 34 "compact" rings. Super Record adds 177.5
and 180mm arms, but for regular rings only, no compact.
Bottom
brackets ~
All cups are of made of heat treated aluminum and include extra-low friction
seals. Athena, Chorus, Centaur, and Veloce bearings are precision ground steel with
tolerances of 1/1000 mm. Record bottom brackets include ultra-smooth ceramic
bearings. Super Record bearings add Cronitect ceramic bearings that are
thermo-chemically treated with chromium for a surface so silky smooth that
grease is no longer needed! Available with English or Italian threading.
Ergo
levers ~
All 6 groups include newly refined Ergo shifter-brake levers. All of the
levers are built around composite bodies of long-glass fibers. The pivots have
been raised for increased power from the hoods. The braking levers contour to
the handlebars for added comfort in all positions. The variable cushion silicone
hoods, included on all models, are firmer on the sides for better grip and
softer on the tops for more comfort. All front levers include micro adjustments
for fine tuning the front derailleur's chain clearance as you change gears.
Shift levers throw to as many as 3 gears easier or 5 gears tougher with each
single push.
Centaur
and Veloce levers work with both double and triple cranksets while Super Record,
Record, and Chorus work with doubles only.
Veloce Ergos feature aluminum levers pivoting on brass bushings. Centaur
levers are available in an aluminum version as well as an upgraded version with
carbon composite levers. The upgraded carbon composite levers pivot on lighter and smoother
polymer bushings. Athena levers are the same as Centaur carbons but move from 10
speed to 11 speed internals. Chorus braking blades are full carbon. With their
internal bushings, Chorus Ergos are actually the lightest of Campy's levers. Record levers step up to ball bearing pivots;
though 5 grams per lever heavier than bushings, ball bearings are smoother and
even more consistent in shifting. Super
Record levers add a carbon insert to the thumb lever, titanium internals, and an
aero-relief "cut-out" molded into the tops of the brake levers.
Rear
Derailleurs ~

The Centaur and Veloce models are made of forged aluminum with special
anti-vibration pulleys spinning on brass bushings. With Athena, Campagnolo moves
from 10 to 11 speed systems. The Athena body is made of special die-cast
aluminum for lighter weight. The Chorus derailleur body is
fitted with an oversized carbon fiber outer plate that is 150% stronger than
aluminum for noticeably more precise shifting. Both Athena and Chorus pulleys are relieved with
pierce-molding for lighter weight in a primary moving part. The Record rear
surrounds the pulleys with carbon and metal composite cage plates and moves to
ceramic bushings in both the upper and lower pulleys. Super Record adds ceramic
ball bearings to the lower pulley plus titanium finishing bolts on the body.
Super Record, Record, Chorus, and Athena come in one cage length to handle up to a 27t
cassette. Centaur comes in short to handle a 26t and medium to handle a 29t
cassette.
Front
Derailleurs ~
All front derailleurs include anti-friction surface treatments for smoother
and quieter shifting. The Centaur model moves to a new "M" shaped body for
increased rigidity, a "Z" shaped cage for faster shifting with less "feathering"
required, and an "Even-O" clamping system for more precise meshing with the
frameset. Athena uses an all-aluminum body with chrome plated nickel cage
plates. Chorus adds light alloy pivots and light alloy cages plates. Super Record and Record feature
carbon-metal composite cages with composite and alloy pivots. Available in
all models in braze-on, 32mm, and 35mm. Same derailleur works for both regular
and compact chainrings.
Brakes
~
All brake models are "skeleton" designs with forged cutouts to decrease
weight and increase aerodynamics while making no sacrifice in strength. Veloce
and Centaur brake calipers are dual pivot front and rear for maximum gripping
power. In Super Record, Record, Chorus, and Athena, front
brakes are dual pivot while rear brakes are single pivot to prevent
dreaded wheel lockup. Centaur calipers add orbital pad mounts for much easier
setup. Athena calipers step up to light alloy arm construction to pare weight by
16 grams. Chorus adds light alloy hardware that saves an additional 24 grams. Veloce, Centaur,
Athena, and Chorus arms pivot on brass bushings while Record and Super Record pivot on
ball bearings. Super Record moves to titanium hardware. In 2011, Campagnolo
added a dual pivot rear caliper as an option in Super Record, Record, Chorus,
and Athena groups. This option is aimed at riders that can relinquish some
braking control in exchange for additional gripping power. Because braking
control is generally more important than gripping power, Cycles BiKyle specifies
single pivot rear brakes in all 11-speed Campagnolo groups unless a dual pivot
rear is specifically requested.
Cassettes
~
All models feature "ultra-drive" machining for optimal shifting speed and
precision. Veloce cassettes are built from 10 individual steel cogs with
galvanized finishes. Centaur cassettes are finished in nickel-chrome for
increased durability and less chatter. Chorus cassettes, also used in Athena
groups, use a reinforced
aluminum carrier to hold the upper 6 cogs and a special light alloy lockring to
retain the cassette on the wheel. The 3 largest cogs on Record cassettes are
made of titanium and sit on a light alloy carrier. The 6 largest cogs in a Super
Record cassette are titanium and sit on 2 light alloy carriers.

Chains
~
The Veloce 10 speed chain (272 grams) is 5.9mm wide and has optimized plate shapings for
the finest shifting. Centaur 10 speed chains (268 grams) add a specially hardened
Teflon-like anti-friction surface treatment plus dual piercings on each link to
save weight. The pivot pins on Record 10 chains (255 grams) are
individually drilled to further reduce weight in a primary rotating part. The Chorus 11 speed chain,
also used in the Athena group, is 5.5mm wide yet 20% stronger than 10
speed chains due to its new metal alloys. This extra-narrow chain is the first
multi-speed bicycle chain that does not contact adjacent cogs. Therefore, it's
smoother and more friction-free than any previous design. The Record 11 speed
chain, also used in the Super Record group, uses specially heat treated hollow
link pins to save even more weight.
